Katie’s actions embody the very essence of patient-centred care. Her unwavering kindness, empathy, and determination to honour this patient’s final wish are truly inspiring and exemplify the values we hold dear within our Trust. She is a shining example of the extraordinary difference one person can make in the lives of others at the end of their lives. We are very lucky to have her in our Trust.

A patient with no fixed abode came to the emergency department with their dog and needed to be admitted. The patient was from out of the area and had no local connections.

Sam selflessly volunteered to take the dog home, with patient consent, and care for him at his own expense. Sam showed kindness and compassion, and his commitment demonstrates how every member of our team contributes to patient care.

Ashleigh was nominated by a student nurse on placement in the emergency department who she helped to support through their first patient death.

"She showed me kindness throughout my placement. When I encounter nurses like Ashleigh, it reminds me why I first chose to become a nurse.”

Karen identified a gap in care for patients undergoing breast surgery, as many lacked access to a well-fitting, supportive bra.

Karen’s dedication, hard work, and commitment to improving patient care are deeply appreciated by the entire team and make a meaningful difference to patients’ lives.

Mel embodies the Trust’s values, consistently going above and beyond to support her colleagues.

Mel’s care, attention to detail, and dedication to her team are truly inspiring.

Helen was nominated for her exceptional dedication and compassion.

Her actions prevented a hospital admission and ensured the patient received the necessary care. Helen’s commitment to her patients and willingness to go the extra mile exemplify what it means to be an outstanding and compassionate nurse.

A respiratory patient nearing the end of life wished to marry their long-term partner. The respiratory nurses went above and beyond to organise the entire wedding, arranging paperwork, and buying flowers, a cake, and bunting with their own money.

The event showcased the team’s exceptional care, compassion, and dedication to their patients, going far beyond their clinical roles to make a profound difference. Their actions reflect the true spirit of going the extra mile to support those in their care.

During a PLACE assessment, Victoria guided a visitor with a vision impairment who was considering surgery on Willow Eye Unit.

The visitor was so confident in her care that they decided to have their surgery at the unit.

Henrietta was nominated by her colleagues, Hannah, Sophie, and Ellie, for her remarkable dedication and compassion during Scarborough Science and Engineering Week.

Henrietta’s insight, patience, and commitment made a significant impact, creating a safe and supportive environment for all. Henrietta’s actions went above and beyond, embodying the values of our organisation.

Dr. Abbasi joined the team as a Locum Consultant in May and, within a week, stepped up when the department found themselves a consultant down.

Dr. Abbasi’s kindness, cheerful demeanour, and exceptional patient care have made him a beloved team member and an inspiration to those around him.

Hattie was nominated for her exceptional dedication in the ED. During one shift, she went above and beyond to find a recently discharged patient after their family contacted the ED with concerns about their location.

Later that shift, she also volunteered to accompany another patient needing urgent transport for an MRI. Hattie’s teamwork, commitment, and care for patient needs exemplify her as an invaluable team member.

Heather noticed on a shift early one morning that a fuse box had caught fire due to a leak and promptly contacted the facilities team, who arrived on-site to assess.

Amidst high-pressure conditions and after a hectic shift, Heather’s professionalism, quick thinking, and calm demeanour maintained patient and staff safety until repairs could be made.

Danielle went above and beyond for a patient with no fixed abode who was upset about his lack of clean clothes. He felt his dirty clothes were bothering other patients, which worried him.

Danielle’s thoughtful gesture not only improved his comfort but also boosted his self-esteem. Thank you, Danielle, for consistently going the extra mile and providing such compassionate care for our patients.

Emma is a dedicated Occupational Therapist, providing exceptional community-based care to the South Hambleton & Ryedale area. Despite high demand, she consistently delivers holistic care with a smile, especially for frail and complex patients.

Emma exemplifies the Trust's values, and her work is a testament to the vital role of AHPs in the community.

Ward 39 is praised for the care they provided to a long-stay patient, showing exceptional compassion, kindness, and patience. The entire team created a patient-centred environment and showed kindness and care beyond the family’s expectations.

Under Andrew’s leadership, the ward fosters a compassionate culture, deeply understanding patients and families alike. The family noted Jan’s determination to build a strong bond with the patient, Lisa’s immense support during challenging times, Will, Tallulah, and Nicoleta’s empathy, which uplifted the family, and Marie’s attentiveness, which brightened every day.

Jemma has provided exceptional support to the Scarborough palliative care team, balancing her clinical educator and CNS roles at York Hospital.

Jemma exemplifies the Trust’s core values and is deeply deserving of recognition for her unwavering commitment and dedication to patient care.

Nicola and Debbie were instrumental in fulfilling a palliative patient’s wish to die at home.

After the family expressed their wishes, Nicola and Debbie fast tracked the discharge, making everything happen smoothly. Their dedication and efficiency made a huge difference for the patient and their loved ones.

Recently, an IT issue at Bridlington left many areas without access to phones, computers, or CPD. In the eye clinic, only three computers were functional, and the main scanner and doctors’ rooms had no IT access.

Thanks to their adaptability and positive attitude, the clinic ran smoothly, and everyone was seen on time. Patients were impressed with the seamless operation despite the changes.

Rachel has been instrumental in navigating the Medicine Care Group through significant changes and management restructuring. Despite newly created and vacant posts, Rachel has tirelessly supported staff wellbeing across York, Bridlington, and Scarborough hospitals.

Rachel never seeks recognition, quietly ensuring everyone is supported. Her dedication and values make her an exceptional manager and colleague.

Michaela, Medical Education Simulation and Technology Team Leader, is a true unsung hero of the NHS, making an invaluable contribution to medical education and clinical skills teaching. Often working quietly behind the scenes, she is a vital part of the medical education team, ensuring courses, in-situ simulations, and teaching sessions run smoothly.

Always willing to take on challenges, Michaela’s dedication and organisational skills are unmatched. Recently, she single-handedly organised a rigorous two-week simulation program to test the new Urgent and Emergency Care facility at Scarborough Hospital, bringing together multiple specialities. Her work profoundly impacts the training of clinical staff and the care delivered to patients and she truly deserves recognition for her incredible efforts.

Andy, Domestic Services Supervisor at Malton, demonstrated exceptional dedication and care when he encountered a patient in a state of delirium on a nearby street. With no medical training and no immediate help available, Andy took it upon himself to stay with the patient, keeping them calm, safe, and conscious until medical assistance arrived.

He went far beyond his role, remaining calm and professional throughout, despite the stressful situation. When the ambulance arrived, the crew informed Andy that the patient had overdosed and could have easily slipped away without his intervention. His quick thinking and compassionate actions likely saved a life.

Dr Arikichenin provided exceptional care for a patient with unusual cystic lesions detected during an ultrasound. He was nominated by the patient’s daughter, who said: “Despite my father being a radiologically challenging case, Dr Oli went above and beyond by questioning the diagnosis given by the Leeds MDT, as it didn't align with his extensive clinical experience.

“His continued concern even after my father’s care transferred to Leeds was deeply appreciated. Dr Oli’s dedication and persistence truly made a life-changing difference for my dad.”

Jodie was exceptional in a challenging situation involving a patient with mental health issues requiring constant care.

The patient eventually got to know Jodie on a first name basis and frequently asked for her. A colleague said: “This team truly put the patient’s needs first and handled the situation with exceptional care. This nomination is well-deserved. Thank you.”

Helen fulfilled a special wish for a palliative patient who had been bedbound for a long time and wanted to go outside to see her garden one last time.

Thanks to Helen's efforts, the patient was able to go outside, see her beautiful garden, and enjoy a well-deserved gin and tonic. This act had a profoundly positive effect on the patient and exemplified Helen's dedication to nursing. Helen’s nominator said: “Helen is a true credit to our team and the community she serves.”

Vicki was nominated for going above and beyond to assist an extremely anxious patient and another member of staff. The patient had travelled over three hours, on multiple buses, from York to Selby for a fast-track CT scan, but arrived late and accidentally went to the wrong department, missing their scan.

“The patient, who is on a fast track for suspected cancer, was very grateful. Vicki's actions ensured the patient's pathway continued smoothly.”

Ken and the kitchen/catering team were nominated for their exceptional dedication to patients on Waters Ward. Stroke rehabilitation patients often require modified diets, and Ken’s team meticulously follows Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) recommendations.

The team’s support greatly enhances patients’ quality of life and aids their recovery. SLT Therapist Nicola said: “Working with such a dedicated team is a true privilege!”

Becky, an experienced deputy sister on the special care baby unit (SCBU), chairs the local SCBU parent support group, which provides practical and emotional support to families of newborns needing medical care. Over the past year, Becky researched additional support sources for families facing financial pressures, creating accessible leaflets and a clear poster to guide families to potential benefits.

Her nominator said: “Becky’s dedication and effort behind the scenes make her an invaluable asset to our team.”

In May, the York Biochemistry team faced a major equipment failure, halting their ability to analyse critical tests. Despite the crisis, the team remained calm, informed clinical teams, and arranged for samples to be tested at Scarborough laboratory to minimise delays.

Effective communication and seamless business continuity planning resulted in minimal service disruption. Well done to all involved!

“We arrived on holiday over Easter, and within 15 minutes, my 7-year-old daughter Georgia, who has Down's syndrome, sustained an injury on the beach. An unplanned hospital visit could have been horrendous, but the team at Scarborough A&E was fantastic. They provided the space and time Georgia needed, communicated clearly, and built a lovely rapport with her, making the visit much easier.

“Overall, although it wasn't the holiday we planned, the fantastic care we received at Scarborough Hospital made it easier. I am incredibly impressed with how they managed a child with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour. This is the best example of amazing patient care for someone like Georgia, who needs extra time and support. Well done, Scarborough, and a special thank you to Greg and Ben.”

Dawn, Rebecca, and Paul were nominated by a mother for the care they provided to her son, who was very unwell.

"From arrival to departure, the entire process took about five minutes. The outstanding service and compassionate care were truly commendable. They are a credit to the hospital.”

Heather was nominated by a parent after their son arrived on Rainbow Ward at Scarborough Hospital following a night in the emergency department.

“Heather is an outstanding nurse who encompasses all the Trust’s values. She made a huge difference to my son and our family, and she should be celebrated. The ward was very busy that night, yet she made sure our son was a priority for her.”

Adele recently cared for a child who required surgery and had to wear an oversized gown.

Adele is an outstanding nurse who consistently demonstrates compassion and kindness. Her work with Pyjama Fairies is a brilliant example of her dedication to patient care and experience.

"Thank you, Adele, for your hard work; it does not go unnoticed."

Paul was nominated by a colleague for quickly stepping in to assist a distressed patient.

“Paul’s swift assistance and caring attitude were crucial in keeping the patient safe. His actions reflect the consistent kindness and generosity of the entire Ellerby’s team.”

Ward 17 was nominated twice in recognition of their outstanding care and dedication.

The combined efforts of the Ward 17 team exemplify the highest standards of patient care, showcasing their compassion, dedication, and exceptional ability to handle complex and difficult situations.

Emma supported a patient with a dislocated hip, so that the patient was able to attend her husband’s funeral. As a matter of urgency, Emma arranged for orthotics colleagues to assess the patient so that a hip brace could be provided.

The colleague who nominated Emma said: “She went above and beyond for the patient, to ensure that she was able to go to her husband’s funeral and return afterwards to be with her family.”

A mother has nominated the ward for their compassionate care after the loss of her baby.

"Whenever I pressed my buzzer they were in INSTANTLY, nothing was too much trouble. I’ll never ever be able to repay them but I hope by nominating them for this award they can see they make a huge impact on the people they care for and I’ll be so grateful forever."

Congratulations to Eve, Senior Sister, York Emergency Department, who has been recognised for her care and quick thinking when she stepped in to help a motorcyclist who was seriously injured in a collision. She spent 25 minutes with the patient at the roadside, keeping their airway open until an ambulance arrived, while directing members of the public on how they could best help.

The colleague who nominated Eve said: “I am sure that the support Eve provided to this patient’s airway saved their life as their breathing was very much hindered by their injuries. Eve is humble, brave and acts out of selfless care for her patients. She is an absolute asset to the York Hospital team, and I feel sure her ED colleagues would agree. She is not only a very skilled and competent nurse but also a well-loved and respected member of the ED family.”

Carly, Labour Ward Manager. went above and beyond to support a pregnant patient whose care needs were unusual. She spent many hours developing her care plan, making sure that the patient’s choices and preferences were listened to and reflected throughout. Carly worked hard to make sure the patient had the birth experience that she wanted, and supported team members who had questions about how the care plan would work.

“Carly is a credit to the Trust and works tirelessly to achieve the outcome she needs.”

Jill, a community midwife, was nominated by colleague Catherine for going above and beyond for a couple with learning difficulties who were expecting a baby.

"Jill helped the couple access baby equipment from local charities and attended social care meetings, even on her days off, ensuring continuity for the couple. Recognising concerns about their ability to care for the baby independently, Jill advocated for the couple, making referrals to parenting classes and adult social care for additional support."

Debbie provided invaluable support to a colleague who had found a patient collapsed at home. When it was clear that the patient had died, she stayed on the phone to give guidance and arrived on the scene five minutes later.

"The Trust values run through her blood, which is reflected in every shift she works. She is a true asset to the NHS and our community team is very lucky to have her on board.”

Richard consistently goes the extra mile for patients at Scarborough Hospital. He always has a ready smile, and often takes time to chat with patients and put them at ease.

Nothing is too much trouble for Richard and he demonstrates the Trust values daily.

Recently, a patient with a learning disability needed an echo. Before the test could be carried out, the man needed some help to understand what would happen at the appointment. Rob was really helpful. He provided photos and items, and made recommendations to facilitate the social story and roleplay. Rob even made sure the gentleman didn't have to wait too long for his appointment. Thanks to Rob's help, the echo test went well.

Later on, the same patient needed a sleep study. Lorraine changed his appointment so he only had to come in once instead of twice and adapted the usual demonstration of equipment. The gentleman’s mum said it was the best appointment he'd ever had.

A patient on the ward was desperate to see his wife, who was at home and coming towards the end of her life.

Sue, Claire, the ambulance crew, the patient’s care team, and many others involved in the patient’s care gave this man and his family the gift of a proper goodbye. It’s a heart-warming example of staff going above and beyond their duties.

Sharon helped a patient with very limited funds attend an urgent eye clinic appointment to save his sight.

“She was a very caring person and could recognise what a difference these small gestures could make to the rest of his life – he was very grateful. I wish there were a lot more people like Sharon around.”

Jo, a specialist midwife, was instrumental in our Trust's introduction of BadgerNet, an online maternity notes tool that improves patient safety and care.

“We are proud that our Trust was the first to go live in the region, with much appreciation to Jo for being such a great role model for digital engagement,” said nominator, James Hawkins.

Carol, a community midwife, has been caring for an extremely vulnerable patient with complex needs.

In the days after the patient’s baby had been born, Carol visited her every day to help the lady look after the baby and herself.

The patient struggled to trust new people, yet Carol went above and beyond for the lady and her partner, building a wonderful rapport. Well done, Carol.

A patient with dementia and complex needs was referred to the community therapy team. Due to the nature of their condition, the patient needed a lot of support.

Their care has truly gone the extra mile, leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit to improve a patient’s quality of life. At all stages, they have embodied the Trust’s values and become a shining example of fantastic community care.

Georgia always goes the extra mile to help patients and colleagues but, recently, she exceeded herself.
