Occupational therapy for orthopaedic services
What we do
The orthopaedic occupational therapy team work along side the orthopaedic consultant teams treating patients with ongoing musculo-skeletal conditions following a trauma or elective surgery. The occupational therapy service carries out a wide variety of assessments to facilitate compliance with the post surgery regimes and maximise functional independence.
We work closely with all other multi professional agencies both in the hospital and in the community for the benefit of individual patients.
The occupational therapists also provide a pre-surgery service to patients coming in for orthopaedic elective surgery.
The occupational therapy team is part of an out-patient assessment group ‘joint school’ for those patients due to have a knee or hip replacement. This service provides advice and information to patients to assist them in preparing for their surgery as well as arranging home visits to deal with an environment/equipment needs.
Aims of service
- To co-ordinate/facilitate safe and timely discharge from hospital
- To provide individual assessment and treatment of patients on the wards to maximise independence and to identify appropriate timely referrals on to community services
- To reduce pro-longed stay in hospital and delayed discharges
- To educate patients/relatives and carers of the post operative regimes to prevent post operative complications.
