Eye Department (Ophthalmology)

What we do

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine dealing with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the eye and visual system. The eye, its surrounding structures and the visual system can be affected by a number of clinical conditions.

An ageing population means there are more and more incidences of age-related diseases of the eye, such as age-related macular degeneration. These eye diseases can be successfully treated if caught early, and can be managed effectively with existing treatments and medicines.

The Ophthalmology service encompasses a wide range of conditions, including:

Glaucoma
Cataracts
Medical retina
Corneal conditions
Ocular plastics
Ocular motility
Paediatrics
Vitreo-retinal

The service also has various research portfolios conducting investigations into eye health and eye related diseases.

York Ophthalmology department

The ophthalmology department in York is located at Junction 3 along the main corridor. If entering via the main entrance, make your way to the main corridor, turn left and immediately on your right is the entrance to the eye department.

Scarborough Ophthalmology department

The Scarborough ophthalmology department is located along the main corridor of the South Wing of the hospital. If you enter the hospital through the main entrance in the South Wing, head through the double doors on the right hand side, turn right down the main corridor and take the first right off the main corridor. At the end of the next corridor turn right again into Reception B waiting area.

Bridlington Ophthalmology department

The Bridlington ophthalmology department is located at Reception B next door to outpatients. On entering the hospital turn right down the corridor and signposted is the entrance to the eye department on the right hand side.

Malton Ophthalmology department

The Malton ophthalmology department is located at Ryedale wing. On entering the hospital turn right down the main corridor and signposted is the entrance to the eye department on the right hand side.

Our Sight Support Service is accessed by appointment only. The team can provide non-medical practical and emotional support for patients who are experiencing sight difficulties.

Your clinician can refer you or you can ask at the Eye Clinic reception desk.
