Exercise and pain management

Exercise and activity play an important role in pain management.

Persistent pain can lead to inactivity or avoidance of movement, which can itself lead to further disability. Physiotherapists are movement experts who will support you with physical goal setting and explore the role of activity and exercise as part of your pain management toolkit.

Useful resources

  • Personal exercise diary: this will help you understand more about pain and exercise, assist in monitoring your exercise, help identify physical triggers for your pain, and help map progress with your health and strength.
  • Fitness Studio exercise videos - NHS (www.nhs.uk): instructor-led exercise videos, including aerobic exercises, strength and resistance training, pilates, and yoga.
