Orthopaedic inpatient physiotherapy

There are 3 orthopaedic wards in the hospital: an elective ward for planned orthopaedic procedures such as hip and knee replacements, an adult trauma ward for fractures of any kind, and a ward specialising in the management of people who have fractured the top of their femur.

Our physiotherapy team will also assess and treat when appropriate, orthopaedic cases on the children's ward.

A team of physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants work across these wards to provide high quality patient centred care.  They work closely with other members of the ward team, patients and carers to co-ordinate treatments and plan for a safe and timely discharge from hospital.

Physiotherapists are involved with assisting patients to regain or maximize their independence by teaching them to mobilse safely with the appropriate walking aids. They provide advice and information about exercises and general progression of treatments.

Where appropriate, further ongoing physiotherapy is organised, this may be in an outpatient physiotherapy department, rehabilitation units within the region, or home environment if required
