Stroke physiotherapy services

What we do

Stroke physiotherapists provide specialist assessment, treatment and management of patients suffering from the symptoms of stroke.

The aim of physiotherapy is to maximise a person’s independence and to promote physical activity. Patients are individually assessed and each patient will have their own programme of treatment to facilitate achieving specific goals. These may be related to walking, balance, using the affected arm and hand.

If appropriate, patients can access the orthotics department the botulinum toxin clinic and a stroke exercise group.

Where we are

The service is both hospital based and community based. Within York Hospital, the service is delivered on the acute stroke ward, on the rehabilitation unit and in an outpatient setting. In the community, patients are seen within their own homes or within any other appropriate and relevant community setting.
