York Occupational Therapist receives Patient Choice Award

16 November 2023

The winners of the 2023 Celebration of Achievement Awards were revealed in a glittering awards ceremony held at Scarborough Spa recently.

The awards recognise the achievements of staff and volunteers at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Jessica Jones, an Occupational Therapist at York Hospital, was presented with the coveted Patient Choice Award.

Every year the Trust asks patients and their families to tell them about their local hero - the individual who has made a real difference to their experience and created a positive, enduring impression.  Recipients are nominated by patients to recognise all the NHS staff who go that extra mile.

This award gives the public the opportunity to tell the Trust their stories and say 'thank you' by recognising the outstanding care, treatment, and kindness freely given when they needed it the most.

Jess received the award from Dawn Parkes, Interim Chief Nurse, for her kindness shown to a family who had just lost their mum.

Speaking at the ceremony Dawn explained: “Jess's extraordinary care is truly commendable. When it became clear that their mother's passing was imminent, Jess made a remarkable decision to stay by the side of one of the patient's daughters, offering comfort during their difficult time.

“Not stopping there, Jess arranged for a taxi and personally accompanied the daughter back home. She then took on the task of breaking the news to the family members who were abroad at the time. Jess left them a heartfelt sympathy note. The family's gratitude for Jess's exceptional actions in their darkest hour is a testament to her.”

The event, which was attended by 300 staff, showcases the excellent work taking place throughout York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Trust’s annual award ceremony, which is fully sponsored, honours those who go above and beyond for their patients. The awards reflect the diversity of skills, expertise, and contributions staff provide each day for the benefit of others.

Picking up top awards for going above and beyond were staff from hospitals and community teams as well as scientists, nurses, volunteers, and colleagues who show commitment and courage in their daily working lives.

Speaking at the ceremony, Simon Morritt, Chief Executive, said: “We hear great stories every day about how staff across the Trust are making a positive impact on the lives of others.  It’s not just what they do, but the way in which they do it - by living and breathing the Trust values of kindness, openness, and excellence.”
