Services for children and young people who have been sexually assaulted

Mountain Health Care provides a service for children and young people from 0-16 years of age who have disclosed sexual assault or abuse or where it is suspected that it may have happened.

When a child/young person attends the service, they will come with either a social worker or police officer and one or both of their parents/carers.

The child/young person can talk to the nurse or doctor about what has happened and they can have a check up (an examination) to check they are ok.

The service covers York and North Yorkshire.

Referrals can only be taken from the police or children’s social care.
The children’s sexual assault service cannot see young people under the age of 16 without a social worker or the police being involved in their care.

If you are concerned that you have been sexually harmed or you are worried about someone else, please talk to an adult you can trust such as your teacher, or you can phone the police on 101 or you can contact Childline e 08001111 or visit their webpage www.childline.org.uk

Understanding medical examinations

The centre of expertise on child sexual abuse have produced a short film explaining the paediatric medical examination that takes place when there are concerns of child sexual abuse. Click here to watch the film about the paediatric medical examination

You can find the scoping report on this topic, along with other research and resources relating to child sexual abuse on the CSA Centre’s website.
